“Best offshore I’ve been on since the last offshore,” — a software engineer or sales team veteran.

Regardless of who actually said that, they’re not far from the truth: Offshore 2014 was packed with long 12-hour working days mixed with weekends filled with sightseeing and sunbathing. We got elbows deep in Portugal’s cod and port wine culture, participated in a Portuguese version of the running of the bulls, bunkered up at a restored monastery for a week, enjoyed a live fado performance, and much, much more.  Continue Reading…

The story goes something like this:

Girl gets a phone call. Girl is invited to go out. It’s raining. Girl doesn’t want to melt in the rain. Mom kicks Girl out of the house. Mom orders Girl to go out and have fun. Girl goes out, meets a group from a San Francisco company called Expensify. Apparently, the entire company is working and backpacking for a whole month in Croatia. Girl laughs with fascination and some disbelief but Girl doesn’t dwell on that because Girl is absolutely fascinated with the energy, drive, and passion each person exudes when talking about the company, coworkers, the CEO, and basically just how much they love what they do.  Continue Reading…

If there’s one thing we love at Expensify more than Lemony, it’s our community of users. From independent contractors to not-for-profits to established startups and companies, we have some of the coolest users in the world. Starting today, we’ll be highlighting some of them in our weekly series, Expensifier of the Week.

Kicking off the series is…. *Drum roll*

Every year, I spend 1-2 months overseas, with probably a trip every month in between. In the last four weeks alone, I spoke at conferences in Norway and Tunisia, before heading to Portugal with the team for our 2014 Offshore. Currently, I’m writing this on a 30-hour journey from Portugal to SFO — which due to the miracle of timezones, happens in a mere 16 hours.

With all this movement, you can say that I’ve had my fair share of both delightful and horrifying experiences in business travel. Along the way, I’ve developed some core nuggets of knowledge that I live by, and I’m passing them along to the next travel-savvy entrepreneur (aka YOU).  Continue Reading…

Olá from Portugal!

We’re halfway through our first week in Lisbon, and oh, what a beautiful city it is!

Traveling abroad with an entire team is exciting, but it also requires a higher level of patience to work together as we’re all in a state of ebb and flow. To stay as productive and on task on the offshore as we are in the office, we follow these few simple guidelines.  Continue Reading…

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to live with 30 of your coworkers?

For Expensify, that’s crossed off our bucket list! We do our annual (totally optional) offshore abroad, but it’s never been on this level in size and scope (not to mention, we don’t all live together under one roof on the offshore). Last week, we spent seven days in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan eating, working, sleeping, and then some; fun was just the tip of the iceberg.  Continue Reading…

Can’t wait to explore places like these in person!

It’s finally happening!

After forming a small team almost 18 months ago in the Upper Peninsula (aka the UP, aka the yoop), the SF team will be flying up to Ironwood for a week to experience the beautiful Upper Peninsula with our other half. From August 18 – 22nd, Continue Reading…

Expensify is unusual in many ways.  But one of our most well documented oddities is our habit of taking the whole company overseas for a month.  There are a huge range of reasons to do this: to work, to play, to finish off the year before, and to get inspired for the year ahead.  But regardless of your reason, here are some hard-learned tips for making the habit work for you:  Continue Reading…
