[Our CEO, David Barrett, was asked to speak in front of the U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On Small Business about how apps like Expensify can impact small businesses in America. We wanted to share his written testimony. Link to the spoken portion is here: David Barrett speaks before Congressional Small Business Committee Enjoy!]

What Congress Can Do to help SMBs

  1. Help create awareness by working with the SBA and Chamber of Commerce to educate small business owners as to what mobile apps are available.
  2. Support the “gig economy” by strengthening employees’ freedom to choose when and how they want to work.
  3. Welcome legal immigrants to start more small businesses and to enable existing SMBs to compete more effectively with large enterprises.
  4. Simplify internet tax collection by centrally aggregating and publishing per-zipcode sales tax rates on a defined schedule.
  5. Encourage crowdfunding by reducing the risk and overhead for business owners to solicit funds from a broader range of investors.
  6. Reward true innovation by creating tough software patent standards to invalidate frivolous claims and stop patent trolls.

We were thrilled to have recently found out that in a recent market share study done by Gartner, that Expensify was the fastest growing ERP software in the world (by revenue growth) in 2014. (Source: Gartner: “Market Share: All Software Markets, Worldwide, 2014,” published on March 31, 2015). If you’re #1 on a list and an incredible company like Workday is #2, you know you’re doing something right.  Continue Reading…

Receipts-1

When I was a child, my mom collected shoeboxes. Big boxes, tall boxes, small boxes, etc. Their varying sizes made them a great storage option.

My parents own a slew of vending machines in and around my hometown and keeping track of their expenses during the year was never a huge priority. As a result, my mom finds the best-priced soda at one store then travels to the next, even if it’s only because she has a coupon for potato chips. She had receipts from Sam’s Club (a retail warehouse), gas stations, grocery stores, and more. It’s a lot of driving and even more receipts.

Hey there! It’s Conor again, one of the Success Coaches at Expensify. Ours is a new team, dedicated to ensuring expense reporting happiness for our customers. This week, we’re following-up a previous announcement by expanding our corporate card export support to NetSuite customers too. This great feature allows you to export transactions to specific company card sub accounts in NetSuite.

Our great two-way integration with NetSuite already supports exporting to journal entries and expense reports, and with this update we’re supporting greater flexibility and enabling our customers to work even more effectively.

Submit to Concur

Submit to Concur, easy as 1, 2, 3!

You might have read the news that our friends at Concur have just sold to SAP, a global enterprise powerhouse.

This is great for nearly everybody: SAP, Concur shareholders, and especially for us.  As for Concur customers… well the future just got a bit cloudier (and not in a good way).  They probably feel locked into a long-term contract with a company whose focus has suddenly shifted away from their needs, and I’m sure that doesn’t feel great.  Expensify exists to help people feel great about their expense reports, so in light of the news we’re offering a very special deal:  Continue Reading…

Uber partners with Expensify to bring SmartRides to business travelers worldwide

I think it’s safe to say Uber is one of the most significant startups of the decade. Their vision is to make arranged transport so cheap and convenient that you literally don’t need to own a car: it’s so audacious, when Travis told me I straight up laughed. After our last startup together, I started Expensify, and he started Uber, and I wished him the best of luck in an incredulous sort of way. Well the time for luck is over. This is happening folks, and woe be to all who stand in Uber’s way.  Continue Reading…

Drag, Drop and Wow!

WOW Fridays, internally referred to as “fWOWdays”, are an experiment we just started at Expensify, and the main idea behind it is to allow engineers to devote 20% of their time working on cool projects that improve our customers lives and WOW them at the same time.

You may have heard of other companies doing something similar, but none of them really do it the way we do expense reports, that is, in a way that doesn’t suck. By focusing the 20% time on “Don’t-break-things-Fridays” and shielding developers from support and other non-critical issues, they can stay in the zone and collaborate with other undistracted developers to build cool things.  Continue Reading…

I don’t have an official title at Expensify but on any given day, I work with the financials, recruiting efforts, hiring, onboarding, office management, relocation, etc. My favorite part of the job? Interviewing candidates. I take great pride in overseeing the hiring process at Expensify, ensuring that we grow our team to match the amazing talent we already have on site.

With that said, I wanted to pass along some advice for interviewing. First and foremost, treat interviewing like dating. Whether you are good or bad at dating, mastering a good interview comes with some basic steps.  Continue Reading…

Happy Valentine’s Day!
